A Holiday To Capella

Last week we packed up the car and ventured off to the Central Queensland town of Capella.  Capella is a small country town in the Central Highlands of Queensland.  It is a rural town full of good old country hospitality, in the heart of the coal mining and agricultural district.  For a small town Capella has quite a lot to offer.  There is a beautiful aquatic centre with heated swimming pools, bbq’s, mini golf, cafe and much more.  There is an amazing cultural centre where many events, including concerts, are held.  With many other things to explore in Capella, like the Pioneer Village, Capella Parklands and Capella Peak Range it really is a great place to stop and spend a day or more.

My husband is a born and bred Capella boy and his parents still live in Capella.  They own a small (2500 acres) cattle property, with predominantly Angus and Brangus Cattle.  It is always fun to go back to the farm where we enjoy working with the cattle and the general day to day running of the farm.  The peace and quiet of the real country life is very inviting and relaxing, however there is a lot of hard work as well.

On Friday the 24th of May it was the Annual Capella Show.  What a great day we had at this traditional country show.  There were horse classes, including show jumping, dressage, hacking and led classes, cattle showing, a baby animal barn, cakes and produce exhibits, woodchopping, fireworks and of course sideshow alley.

Most of our day was spent in the Cattle Show Ring.  The family took a total of five head of  cattle to the show, three stud heifers and two led steers to be shown in the stud cattle classes. In general the judges are looking for cattle that are well conformed, quite and of good carcass quality.  There were a variety of different beef breeds on show including Angus, Brangus and Brahmans.  The cattle we took to the show did very well.  They won Junior Bos-Taurus Female and Grand Champion Led Steer and Reserve Grand Champion Led Steer.

My parents-in-law were very happy with the results from the show.  Showing the cattle is a very big part of their life, it involves a lot of work leading up to the show and on show day.  By taking the cattle to shows it gives them a chance to promote their stud and in particular the quality of bulls and cattle that they are producing.  The Capella show kicks off their show season and they are now doing a show every week or two until the end of June.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit home to Capella and the Capella Show.  We can’t wait to go again soon.
