soldier-919202_640Alongside our brave men and women who serve and protect our country are some very special, well trained dogs. As a dog lover it melts my heart to see some of the beautiful images and tributes that go around on social media about soldiers and their dog’s. The bond that these soldiers and their dog’s have is remarkable and based on trust, respect and love.

The most common breeds used as military dogs are German Shepherds and Belgian Shepherd Malinois, however many other breeds and crossbreeds are used, provided the individual dog is well suited to the job at hand. Training these dogs takes a lot of time, effort and commitment. Understandably the dog and handler form a very unique bond built on trust and mutual respect.

de-sexing-4blogAs a nation that believes in animal rights and responsible pet ownership we need to reduce the number of animals being bred. If less animals were being irresponsibly bred then in turn this would reduce the number of unwanted, mistreated, stray and abandoned animals.

I am a strong believer in getting your pets desexed. I feel that there really isn’t any need to keep an entire (undesexed) dog or cat unless you are a registered breeder. I believe that all pets should be desexed before they become sexually mature enough to breed, so by 3-6 months of age.

Many people think that having a litter of puppies or kittens is fun and they are so cute or possibly a way to make some extra money. In my opinion these are not good enough reasons to bring these innocent fur babies into the world. Some people even think that owning a dog or cat and then breeding them is their “right”. Owning an animal is not a “right” it is a responsibility! Dogs and cats are living breathing creatures that require and deserve to be cared for.

Dogs are not only fantastic companions and man’s best friend but some dogs have an even more important role to play. Some dogs save lives.

Medical Alert Dogs are specially trained dogs that can alert their owner to health dangers such as seizures and hypoglycemia. These amazing dogs can provide people that suffer from potentially life threatening conditions such as epilepsy, diabetes and seizure disorders with some independence by acting as an early warning system and supporting or helping them through an episode.

Caged Chickens

Have you seen the new advertisements running on television and media outlets at the moment about our egg producing hens?  The “That Ain’t No Way To Treat A Lady” campaign, like many others that have been run, is aiming to raise awareness about the lives led by our egg producing hens here in Australia.

I am supportive of any campaign that might help put a stop to caged hens and I think this one is a really clever and engaging way to raise awareness. I enjoy the comical and yet still informative approach to the topic rather than the “shock value” approach with graphic and unpleasant (although truthful) images.  It still gets the message across to consumers and it is also nice to see a number of celebrities supporting the cause. The hope is that by supplying consumers with more facts about caged hens it will encourage them to re-consider the types of eggs they are purchasing and hopefully avoid the cage laid eggs.
